The MQ-135 is a metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor manufactured by Hanwei Electronics for air quality monitoring. It detects a range of harmful gases including ammonia (NH3), nitrogen oxides (NOx), alcohol, benzene, smoke, and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the 10-1000ppm range. The tin dioxide sensing element changes resistance in response to target gases, with higher concentrations producing lower resistance. Standard breakout modules provide both analog and digital outputs with adjustable threshold. The MQ-135 is commonly used in air purifiers, HVAC systems, and environmental monitoring stations to assess overall air quality.

The MQ-135 uses a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element. In clean air, oxygen molecules adsorbed on the SnO2 surface trap electrons, creating a depletion layer and increasing sensor resistance. When target gases (NH3, NOx, VOCs, CO2) are present, they react with the adsorbed oxygen, releasing trapped electrons and decreasing resistance. The resistance change follows a logarithmic relationship with gas concentration. The internal heater maintains the sensing element at approximately 300C for optimal reactivity. The sensor cannot distinguish between different gases – it provides a composite air quality reading. For specific gas identification, additional sensors or algorithms are required.
