The MCP41010-I/SN from Microchip is a single-channel 8-bit volatile digital potentiometer with 10kOhm end-to-end resistance in SOIC-8. It provides 256 tap positions controlled via SPI interface at up to 10MHz. The low 1uA standby current and 2.7-5.5V supply range suit battery-powered applications. The volatile register resets to mid-scale on power-up.

The MCP41010-I/SN operates as an SPI-controlled digital potentiometer. (1) The SPI interface receives 16-bit command frames: a command byte (selecting pot and operation) followed by a data byte (setting wiper position 0-255). The wiper connects to one of 256 resistor taps along the 10kOhm resistive ladder. (2) In potentiometer mode, the wiper voltage divides between terminals A and B. In rheostat mode, only one terminal and the wiper are used, creating a variable resistance from 0 to 10kOhm. (3) The volatile wiper register resets to mid-scale (80h) on power-up. The 52 Ohm wiper resistance adds to the calculated tap resistance. The 1MHz bandwidth and 2us settling time support fast adjustment applications.
