The MAX998EUT+T is a single-channel, general-purpose comparator from Analog Devices/Maxim Integrated. It operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply and features a push-pull rail-to-rail output that eliminates the need for an external pull-up resistor. With a maximum propagation delay of only 28ns, it responds quickly to input transitions. The internal 5mV hysteresis prevents output oscillation near the switching threshold. The device draws just 650µA maximum supply current, making it suitable for battery-powered applications. High CMRR (95dB) and PSRR (100dB) ensure reliable operation in noisy environments.

The MAX998 compares the voltage at its non-inverting input (IN+) against the inverting input (IN-). When IN+ exceeds IN- by more than the input offset voltage plus hysteresis, the output drives to the positive rail. When IN- exceeds IN+ by the same margin, the output drives to the negative rail (ground). The push-pull output stage actively drives both high and low states, unlike open-drain comparators that require an external pull-up resistor. The 5mV internal hysteresis creates a small voltage window around the switching threshold, preventing multiple output transitions when the input signal is slow or noisy.

  • Low-Battery Detection: Connect IN- to a reference voltage derived from VCC via resistor divider, and IN+ to the battery voltage. When battery drops below threshold, the output transitions low, triggering a low-battery indicator or shutdown sequence. The push-pull output directly drives an LED or MCU GPIO without a pull-up resistor.
  • Zero-Crossing Detection: For AC line monitoring, connect IN+ to the rectified AC signal through a current-limiting resistor and IN- to ground. The 28ns propagation delay enables precise zero-cross timing for TRIAC dimming or relay control applications.
  • Window Comparator: Use two MAX998 devices with different reference thresholds to create a window comparator. The outputs feed an AND gate to indicate when the input signal is within the acceptable voltage range, useful for power supply monitoring and fault detection.
