The LD1117ADT18TR from STMicroelectronics is a 1.8 V fixed-output low-dropout linear voltage regulator capable of delivering up to 800 mA. The device features a maximum dropout voltage of 1.1 V at full load, enabling efficient regulation from a 3.3 V input to a 1.8 V output. Internal current limiting and thermal shutdown protect against fault conditions. The LD1117A series improves upon the original LD1117 with better accuracy (+/-1% vs +/-2%) and lower dropout voltage. Only a 2.2 uF output capacitor is required for stability. The DPAK package provides excellent thermal performance with low junction-to-ambient thermal resistance.

The LD1117ADT18TR uses a PNP pass transistor in a common-emitter configuration to achieve low dropout voltage. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (sensed through an internal resistor divider) with an internal 1.25 V bandgap reference. The amplifier output drives the PNP pass transistor to maintain regulation. When the output voltage drops below 1.8 V, the error amplifier increases the base drive to the PNP transistor, increasing output current and restoring the output voltage. The dropout voltage is the minimum input-to-output differential required for regulation, determined by the VCE(sat) of the PNP pass transistor plus the ballast resistor voltage drop. At 800 mA, this is typically 1.1 V. The internal current limit circuit senses the voltage across a ballast resistor and reduces the pass transistor drive when the current exceeds approximately 1.2 A. The thermal shutdown activates at approximately 150C junction temperature.
