The ATMEGA64A-MU from Microchip (formerly Atmel) is a high-performance 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 64 KB ISP Flash, 4 KB SRAM, and 2 KB EEPROM. The AVR core achieves 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz with most instructions executing in a single clock cycle. The device features two USARTs, one SPI, one TWI (I2C), an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, six PWM channels, and four timers (two 8-bit and two 16-bit). The 53 I/O pins provide extensive connectivity for multi-function designs. The QFN-64 package with 0.5mm pitch offers a compact footprint for space-constrained applications. The JTAG interface supports on-chip debugging and boundary scan, while debugWIRE provides a single-pin debug alternative.

The ATMEGA64A-MU uses the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with 130 instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle. The 32 general-purpose registers are directly connected to the ALU, allowing two registers to be accessed in one instruction and the result written back in the same cycle. The Flash is organized as 32K x 16-bit words (most instructions are 16-bit). The 4 KB SRAM supports direct, indirect (with displacement), and indirect with pre-decrement/post-increment addressing modes. The two USARTs support synchronous and asynchronous operation with frame error and parity error detection. The 10-bit ADC uses a successive approximation architecture with 65-260 us conversion time. The Timer/Counter modules support PWM generation, input capture, and output compare modes. The EEPROM is byte-addressable with a dedicated write controller that handles erase-then-write cycles automatically.
