The AD620ARZ from Analog Devices is a low-cost, high-precision instrumentation amplifier that requires only one external resistor to set gains from 1 to 10,000. The device features 30uV typical input offset voltage, 0.6uV/C max offset drift, and 1.0nA max input bias current (achieved through Super-beta input processing), making it ideal for precision data acquisition. The 100dB minimum CMRR at G=10 rejects common-mode interference in bridge and thermocouple applications. The 9 nV/sqrt(Hz) input voltage noise at 1kHz and 0.28uV p-p noise in the 0.1-10Hz band enable low-noise signal conditioning for ECG and weigh scale applications. The 15us settling time to 0.01% supports multiplexed data acquisition systems. The wide +/-2.3V to +/-18V supply range allows operation from dual 5V to +/-15V rails. The 1.3mA max supply current makes it suitable for battery-powered portable equipment. The gain is set by the formula G = 1 + 49.4kOhm/RG, where RG is connected between the RG pins.

The AD620ARZ uses a classic three-op-amp instrumentation amplifier topology with a precision laser-trimmed thin-film resistor network. The input stage consists of two non-inverting amplifiers (A1, A2) with feedback through the internal 24.7kOhm resistors and the external gain resistor RG. The differential input voltage (V+IN – V-IN) appears across RG, creating a current I = (V+IN – V-IN) / RG. This current flows through the internal 24.7kOhm resistors, producing a preamplified differential voltage of (V+IN – V-IN) x (1 + 2 x 24.7k/RG) = (V+IN – V-IN) x (1 + 49.4k/RG) at the outputs of A1 and A2. The output stage (A3) is a unity-gain difference amplifier that converts the differential signal to a single-ended output. The internal 24.7kOhm and 10kOhm resistors are laser-trimmed to achieve the high CMRR specification. The Super-beta input transistors provide the 1nA max input bias current by using high-gain PNP transistors in the input pair, which is critical for high-impedance sensor interfaces where bias current would create offset voltage across source resistance. The settling time of 15us to 0.01% is achieved through the optimized compensation of the internal amplifiers.
