The ADV7391BCPZ from Analog Devices is a low-power, chip-scale 10-bit standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) video encoder in a 32-lead LFCSP (5x5mm) package. The device integrates three high-quality 10-bit video DACs that support composite (CVBS), S-Video (Y-C), and component (YPrPb/RGB) analog outputs. The 8-bit video input port accepts 4:2:2 YCrCb data for SD, ED, and HD formats via SDR or DDR interface. The DACs feature 16x oversampling at 216MHz for SD, 8x at 216MHz for ED, and 4x at 297MHz for HD, providing exceptional output quality with minimal external filtering. The device includes a fully programmable YCrCb to RGB color space matrix, gamma correction, programmable adaptive filters, and an internal test pattern generator. Advanced power management features include patented content-dependent low-power DAC operation, automatic cable detection with DAC auto power-down, and sleep mode. I2C serial interface provides register-based control of all programmable features. The 1.8V digital and 2.7V/3.3V analog supply architecture minimizes power consumption.

The ADV7391BCPZ converts digital YCrCb video data to analog composite/component video. (1) Input Processing: The 8-bit input port accepts 4:2:2 YCrCb data in SDR mode for SD formats or DDR mode for HD formats (720p/1080i). EAV/SAV timing codes or external sync signals define the video timing. (2) Color Space Conversion: A programmable matrix converts YCrCb to RGB when component RGB output is required. Gamma correction can be applied to compensate for display nonlinearity. (3) Interpolation and Filtering: The digital video data is upsampled by the oversampling ratio (16x for SD, 4x for HD). Programmable luma and chroma filters shape the frequency response to meet NTSC/PAL specifications for SD, or to control sharpness for HD. (4) DAC: Three 10-bit current-steering DACs convert the digital samples to analog signals. The 37mA maximum output current drives 37.5 ohm loads (75 ohm source + 75 ohm load) to standard video levels. The high oversampling rate pushes the DAC images far beyond the video band, simplifying external analog filtering. (5) Timing Generator: An on-chip video timing generator produces all required sync, blanking, and subcarrier signals for NTSC M, PAL B/D/G/H/I/M/N formats.
