The ADR02BRZ-REEL7 from Analog Devices is a 5.0V ultra-precision voltage reference in a SOIC-8 package, part of the ADR01/ADR02/ADR03/ADR06 family covering 2.5V, 5.0V, 2.048V, and 3.0V outputs. The device provides +/-0.06% initial accuracy (A grade) and 3ppm/C typical temperature drift, making it one of the most stable 5.0V references available in an SOIC-8 package. The 10uV p-p noise (0.1-10Hz) ensures that the reference voltage does not degrade the performance of high-resolution ADCs and DACs, supporting up to 20-bit converter resolution. The +/-10mA output current capability allows the device to drive multiple converter reference inputs and resistive loads without buffering. The 7V to 36V input supply range supports a wide variety of power supply architectures. The SOIC-8 footprint is pin-compatible with the industry-standard REF02, enabling direct upgrades in existing designs that require improved accuracy and stability. The device uses a buried Zener reference topology, which provides inherently low noise and excellent long-term stability (50ppm/1000 hours typical).

The ADR02BRZ-REEL7 uses a buried Zener reference with temperature compensation. (1) Buried Zener: Unlike surface Zener diodes that are susceptible to surface contamination and leakage, the buried Zener is formed below the silicon surface using a dedicated buried diffusion. This provides inherently lower noise, better stability, and superior temperature characteristics compared to surface Zeners or bandgap references. (2) Temperature Compensation: The raw Zener voltage is approximately 6.3V with a positive temperature coefficient. The reference circuit adds a forward-biased diode with negative temperature coefficient to cancel the Zener TC, achieving the ultra-low 3ppm/C drift. The temperature compensation is factory-trimmed for each individual device. (3) Output Regulation: An internal error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (from an internal precision resistor divider) with the reference voltage. The amplifier drives a series pass element to regulate the output at 5.0V. The amplifier bandwidth and compensation ensure stability with capacitive loads up to the specified limit. (4) Sinking Capability: The output stage can both source and sink current (+/-10mA), allowing it to drive loads that may pull the output above or below the set point, such as DAC reference inputs with dynamic loading.
