The 3224J-1-104E is a 100kOhm surface-mount trimming potentiometer (trimmer) from Bourns in a 3×3.5×1.5mm J-lead SMD package, rated at 0.2W. It uses a cermet (ceramic-metal) resistive element: a thick-film paste of ruthenium oxide (RuO2) is screen-printed onto an alumina substrate and fired at 850C. The wiper is a multi-finger precious metal contact (usually Ag-Pd alloy) that slides along the resistive track when the adjustment screw is turned (typically 11 turns for full range). The 104 in the part number encodes the resistance: 10 x 10^4 = 100,000 Ohms (100kOhm). The -1 suffix specifies the adjustment type (top-adjust). The J-lead form factor provides a small footprint for automated SMT assembly with reflow soldering compatibility (260C peak for 10s). The absolute minimum resistance (wiper contact resistance) is specified as 2% of total resistance or 2 Ohms, whichever is greater. Resolution is essentially infinite (continuous adjustment), limited only by the mechanical step size. The cermet element provides +/-10% tolerance and temperature coefficient of +/-100ppm/C. Trimmer potentiometers are used for one-time factory calibration of circuit parameters (gain, offset, threshold voltage) and are not designed for frequent user adjustment. Rated for 200 cycles of adjustment.
