The TPS55340QRTETQ1 from Texas Instruments is an automotive-qualified non-synchronous boost/SEPIC/flyback DC/DC converter with an integrated 5A NPN power switch. The device operates from an input voltage range of 2.7V to 28V and can generate output voltages up to 38V, making it suitable for a wide range of automotive and industrial boost applications. The 2MHz maximum switching frequency allows the use of small external inductors and capacitors, minimizing solution size and cost. The switching frequency can be adjusted from 100kHz to 2.2MHz via an external resistor on the RT pin, and an external synchronization clock can be applied to the SYNC pin for systems requiring frequency alignment with other switching converters. The converter uses current-mode control with internal slope compensation for stable operation across a wide range of input/output voltages and inductor values. A programmable soft-start limits inrush current during startup. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and thermal shutdown. A power-good (PG) open-drain output indicates when the output voltage is within regulation. The device is AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified, supporting operation from -40 to +125C ambient, making it suitable for under-hood automotive applications such as LED headlight drivers and industrial boost converters. The compact VQFN-16 package (3x3mm) minimizes board space requirements.

The TPS55340QRTETQ1 operates as a current-mode boost converter with an integrated NPN power switch. Key subsystems include: (1) Current-Mode PWM Controller – the error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage with the 1.204V reference; the error amplifier output (via COMP pin) sets the peak switch current threshold; the PWM comparator turns off the NPN switch when the peak current reaches the threshold; this provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting and simplifies loop compensation; (2) Integrated NPN Switch – a 5A NPN Darlington power switch connects between VIN (via inductor) and SW pin; when the switch turns on, inductor current ramps up; when off, the inductor current flows through the external Schottky diode to the output; (3) Boost Operation – output voltage is set by VOUT = 1.204V x (1 + R1/R2) where R1 connects from VOUT to FB and R2 from FB to GND; the converter operates in continuous conduction mode (CCM) at heavy loads and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) at light loads; (4) Frequency Control – the RT pin sets the switching frequency via a resistor to GND; the SYNC pin accepts an external clock for synchronization; (5) Protection – cycle-by-cycle current limit at approximately 7A peak; UVLO disables switching when VIN drops below threshold; thermal shutdown at approximately 165C junction; soft-start ramps the COMP voltage gradually to limit inrush current.
