The LM358N from Texas Instruments is the dual version of the industry-standard LM324 quad op-amp, containing two independent amplifiers in an 8-PDIP package. It operates from a single 3V to 32V supply with input common-mode range that includes ground, making it the most popular dual op-amp for single-supply applications. The output can swing to within a few millivolts of ground under light load, eliminating the need for a negative supply in many circuits. With 1MHz GBW, 0.7V/us slew rate, and only 0.5mA total supply current, it handles most low-frequency signal conditioning tasks efficiently. The standard 8-pin dual op-amp pinout is shared with the NE5532, TL072, and other dual op-amps, allowing easy prototyping and substitution.

The LM358N uses a PNP differential input stage that allows the input common-mode voltage to extend to ground (and approximately 0.3V below). The input stage feeds a gain stage with internal compensation providing a 1MHz gain-bandwidth product and unity-gain stability without external components. The class AB output stage can source approximately 20mA but has limited sinking capability (approximately 50uA to ground through a current source). The output can swing to within approximately 1.5V of VCC and to within millivolts of ground. The internal bias circuit provides temperature-stable operation. The two amplifiers share only VCC and GND connections, operating independently otherwise.
