The TPS62745DSST from Texas Instruments is an ultra-low quiescent current step-down converter designed for battery-powered IoT and energy-harvesting applications. With only 350nA operating quiescent current, it draws virtually no power during idle periods, extending coin-cell battery life from months to years. The output voltage is pin-selectable from 1.2V to 3.3V in 100mV steps using the VSEL pins, eliminating feedback resistors and their leakage current. The converter achieves up to 95% efficiency even at 10mA load, a remarkable feat that traditional buck converters cannot match at light loads. The 2MHz switching frequency allows use of a tiny 1uH inductor in a 2x2mm footprint. A pass-through mode connects input directly to output with only 40mOhm resistance when the output is close to the target, achieving near-zero dropout for maximum energy extraction from batteries.

The TPS62745DSST uses a hysteretic control scheme optimized for ultra-low quiescent current. In discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), the converter delivers a fixed energy packet on each switching cycle, then enters a low-power sleep state. The output voltage is monitored by a nano-power comparator; when VOUT drops below the lower threshold, a new switching cycle begins. This pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) approach maintains high efficiency at light loads because the switching frequency decreases with load current. At 350nA Iq, the converter’s own power consumption is negligible: a CR2032 coin cell (225mAh) would last over 73 years at 350nA drain. The VSEL pins (4 pins) select the output voltage by connecting to VDD or GND in binary combinations, covering 1.2V to 3.3V in 100mV steps. The pass-through mode activates when VIN is close to the target VOUT, bypassing the converter entirely with a 40mOhm MOSFET switch.
