The LM386N-3 from Texas Instruments is a low-voltage audio power amplifier designed for battery-powered applications. It delivers 500mW into an 8 Ohm speaker from a single 9V supply with only 4mA quiescent current, making it ideal for portable audio devices. The default voltage gain of 20 (26dB) requires no external components; adding a capacitor between pins 1 and 8 increases the gain to 200 (46dB). The output is self-centering at VCC/2, eliminating the need for a coupling capacitor in some configurations. With only a handful of external components, a complete audio amplifier can be built in minutes. The LM386 has been the go-to audio amplifier IC for decades, used in everything from guitar practice amps to toy electronics.

The LM386 uses a class AB output stage with a differential input pair. The input stage is ground-referenced, accepting signals directly without DC blocking capacitors in many configurations. The internal feedback network sets the default gain to 20; connecting a capacitor (10uF typical) between pins 1 and 8 bypasses the internal 1.35kOhm resistor, increasing gain to 200. The output stage is biased to VCC/2 by an internal voltage divider, allowing single-supply operation with the output coupling capacitor blocking the DC offset from the speaker. The 300kHz bandwidth provides ample margin for audio applications. The low quiescent current of 4mA makes battery operation practical. The class AB output stage delivers reasonable efficiency while maintaining low crossover distortion.
