The LM2596 is a monolithic integrated circuit from Texas Instruments that provides all the active functions for a step-down (buck) switching regulator capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. Available in fixed 3.3V, 5V, 12V output versions and an adjustable version (1.2V to 37V), it requires a minimum number of external components. The 150kHz switching frequency allows the use of smaller and lower cost inductors and capacitors. Internal features include thermal shutdown, current limiting, and an on/off standby mode that reduces quiescent current to 50uA.

The LM2596 uses a fixed-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) control scheme operating at 150kHz. The internal power switch (Darlington NPN) connects the input voltage to the output inductor during the on-time, storing energy in the inductor’s magnetic field. During the off-time, the inductor current flows through the external catch diode to the load and output capacitor. The feedback comparator monitors the output voltage and adjusts the duty cycle to maintain regulation. Current mode control provides inherent cycle-by-cycle current limiting. The thermal shutdown circuit disables the switch when junction temperature exceeds approximately 150C.
