The LM2576R-ADJ from Texas Instruments is a classic 3A step-down switching voltage regulator with an adjustable output range of 1.23V to 37V. Its simplicity is a key advantage – only an inductor, catch diode, input capacitor, output capacitor, and two feedback resistors are needed for a complete regulator. The 52kHz fixed switching frequency simplifies inductor selection and EMI filtering. Packaged in a TO-263-5 (D2PAK) surface-mount outline, it provides excellent thermal performance for medium-power buck conversion applications.

The LM2576R-ADJ uses a fixed-frequency (52kHz) current-mode buck regulator topology. The internal oscillator generates a fixed-frequency clock that turns on the integrated NPN power transistor. The current through the transistor (and inductor) is sensed and compared with the error amplifier output. When the peak current threshold is reached, the transistor turns off and the catch diode conducts, allowing the inductor current to freewheel. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (from the external resistor divider) with the 1.23V internal reference, adjusting the duty cycle to maintain the desired output voltage. Current limiting and thermal shutdown provide fault protection.
