The AD420ARZ-32-REEL from Analog Devices is a complete 16-bit digital-to-current-loop converter in a 24-pin wide SOIC package. The ARZ denotes SOIC-W package, 32 indicates 32V maximum supply voltage, and REEL indicates tape and reel packaging. Using a second-order sigma-delta architecture, the AD420 achieves 16-bit monotonicity with +/-0.012% INL at very low cost. The programmable output ranges include 4-20mA, 0-20mA, and over-range 0-24mA for current, plus an uncommitted voltage output pin for 0-5V, 0-10V, +/-5V, or +/-10V with an external buffer amplifier. The internal +5V reference (25 ppm/C max) can also supply external circuitry. The 3.3 Mbps 3-wire serial interface supports daisy-chaining multiple DACs across an isolation barrier. Loop fault detection signals when the output current loop is open. The BOOST pin allows an external transistor to offload power dissipation at high supply voltages and currents.

The AD420 operates through four subsystems: (1) Sigma-Delta DAC: A second-order sigma-delta modulator converts the 16-bit digital input to a 1-bit stream at a high oversampling ratio. This architecture inherently guarantees monotonicity, a critical requirement for industrial control loops. The 1-bit stream controls a switched current source that is filtered by two continuous-time RC sections using three external capacitors. (2) Current Output: The filtered current is amplified and mirrored to the supply rail, providing a 4-20mA, 0-20mA, or 0-24mA current source with respect to ground. The RANGE SELECT pins configure the output range. The output compliance voltage extends from 0V to VCC-2.5V. (3) Voltage Output: The VOUT pin provides an unbuffered voltage output from the sigma-delta filter. An external op-amp buffer can be configured for 0-5V, 0-10V, +/-5V, or +/-10V ranges using the internal reference. (4) Fault Detection: When the current loop is open or the compliance voltage is exceeded, the internal output amplifier saturates and the FAULT DETECT open-drain output goes low. This provides early warning before output accuracy degrades.
