The STMicroelectronics VNH5200ASTR-E is a cost-optimized full H-bridge motor driver intended for automotive applications requiring up to 8 A of motor drive current. Built using VIPower M0 technology, the device integrates dual monolithic high-side drivers and two low-side switches in a compact SO-16N package. The RDS(on) of 200 mΩ per leg makes it ideal for lower-power motor control tasks such as door locks, small fans, and seat adjusters. The device supports PWM operation up to 20 kHz for speed control and includes a current sense (CS) output that delivers a current proportional to the motor current for torque monitoring. Comprehensive protection features include undervoltage shutdown, overvoltage clamp, thermal shutdown with cross-conduction prevention, and output short-circuit protection.

The VNH5200ASTR-E operates as a full H-bridge where two high-side and two low-side MOSFET switches control motor direction and speed. Input pins INA and INB determine motor direction through a truth table, while the CS pin provides analog current sense feedback. Each bridge leg is independently enabled via DIAGA/ENA and DIAGB/ENB pins, which also provide fault diagnostic information. The VIPower M0 technology integrates the power MOSFET with intelligent protection on the same die: thermal sensors shut down the affected channel at 170°C with a 20 K hysteresis for automatic restart, overcurrent limitation caps the output during short circuits, and cross-conduction prevention ensures that high-side and low-side switches on the same leg never conduct simultaneously. The device can also operate in half-bridge mode for driving two independent unidirectional loads.
