The VL53L0CXV0DH/1 from STMicroelectronics is the world’s smallest Time-of-Flight (ToF) ranging and detection sensor, measuring just 4.4×2.4×1.0mm. Based on ST’s FlightSense technology, the device emits a 940nm invisible VCSEL laser pulse and measures the round-trip time to determine absolute distance up to 2 meters. Four ranging modes (default, high accuracy, long range, high speed) balance range, accuracy, and speed for different application requirements. The sensor works behind cover glass for concealed installation in consumer products. The compact LGA-12 module integrates the VCSEL, SPAD array, and digital processing in a minimal footprint.

The VL53L0CXV0DH/1 operates as a direct Time-of-Flight (dToF) ranging sensor. (1) A 940nm VCSEL laser emits a short infrared pulse toward the target. The reflected pulse is captured by a Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) array. The time between emission and detection is measured with picosecond resolution, and the distance is calculated as d = c * t / 2. (2) The sensor offers four ranging modes: Default mode (1.2m, 30ms), High Accuracy mode (1.2m, 200us timing budget), Long Range mode (2m, 33ms), and High Speed mode (1.2m, 20ms). Each mode trades off range, accuracy, and measurement time for the specific application. (3) The integrated optics and SPAD array eliminate the need for external lenses. The device works through cover glass with internal crosstalk calibration, enabling concealed installation behind protective glass in smartphones and laptops.
