The TPS73701DRBT from Texas Instruments is a 1A low-dropout linear regulator with an NMOS pass element that provides reverse current protection and ultra-low dropout voltage. The adjustable output version supports 1.2V to 5.5V via an external resistor divider on the FB pin. The NMOS voltage-follower topology achieves 130 mV typical dropout at 1A and is inherently stable with just 1 uF ceramic output capacitor, independent of ESR. Reverse current protection prevents current flow from output to input when the input voltage drops below the output, eliminating the need for external blocking diodes. The device features 1% initial accuracy, < 20 nA shutdown current, and thermal shutdown with foldback current limiting.

The TPS73701DRBT uses an NMOS pass transistor in a voltage-follower (common-drain) configuration. Unlike PMOS LDOs, the NMOS topology does not require a gate drive voltage above VOUT, resulting in naturally low reverse leakage and excellent load transient response. The internal error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage to a 1.216V bandgap reference and drives the NMOS gate to maintain regulation. Reverse current protection uses a comparator that monitors the input-to-output differential; when VOUT exceeds VIN, the NMOS gate is driven off to block reverse current. The foldback current limit reduces the current limit during a fault, reducing power dissipation under short-circuit conditions. The EN pin controls an internal switch that disconnects the bias circuitry, achieving < 20 nA shutdown current.
