The TPS61230DRCR from Texas Instruments is a high-efficiency synchronous boost converter with an integrated 5A switch, optimized for single-cell Li-Ion battery or 3.3V rail to 5V USB power conversion. The device can deliver up to 2.1A output current when converting from 3.3V input to 5V output, making it suitable for USB OTG, power bank, and portable device applications. The synchronous rectification eliminates the external Schottky diode, reducing component count and improving efficiency up to 96%. The quasi-constant on-time valley current mode control provides fast transient response and stable operation across the input/output voltage range. The 2MHz switching frequency allows the use of small external inductors (1.0uH typical) and capacitors, minimizing solution size. At light loads, the device automatically enters power save mode (PFM) to maintain high efficiency with only 30uA quiescent current. In shutdown mode, the load is completely disconnected from the input with only 1.5uA input current, preserving battery life. The EN pin features an adjustable threshold with programmable hysteresis, allowing custom power-on/power-off voltage levels for battery monitoring. Output overvoltage protection, programmable soft-start, and a power-good indicator provide comprehensive system protection. The compact 3x3mm VSON-10 package minimizes board space.

The TPS61230DRCR operates as a synchronous boost converter using quasi-constant on-time valley current mode control. Key subsystems include: (1) Quasi-Constant On-Time Control – the high-side switch on-time is approximately constant (adjusted by input/output voltage ratio); the off-time is modulated to regulate the output; this control scheme provides fast transient response and eliminates the need for external loop compensation; (2) Valley Current Mode – the low-side switch current is sensed at the valley (before turn-on); when the valley current falls below the error amplifier output threshold, the next on-time begins; this provides inherent current limiting and cycle-by-cycle protection; (3) Synchronous Rectification – an integrated low-side NMOS replaces the external Schottky diode; during the off-time, the low-side MOSFET conducts the inductor current to the output with lower voltage drop than a diode, improving efficiency; (4) Power Save Mode – at light loads, the device enters PFM mode where switching pulses are spaced apart to reduce switching losses; the output voltage ripple increases slightly in PFM mode; (5) Load Disconnect – in shutdown, both high-side and low-side MOSFETs are off, disconnecting the output from the input; this prevents battery drain when the device is disabled; (6) Adjustable EN Threshold – the EN pin connects to an internal comparator; external resistors from VIN to EN and EN to GND set the enable threshold voltage and hysteresis for custom battery undervoltage lockout.
