The Texas Instruments TPS2065DR is a current-limited power distribution switch designed for USB and general-purpose power routing applications. The device integrates a 70 mOhm N-channel MOSFET with a precise current-limiting circuit that limits the output current to a programmed threshold (1.5A typical), protecting the upstream power supply from overcurrent and short-circuit faults. The 2.7V to 5.5V input range covers the standard USB 5V supply with margin for voltage drops. The integrated soft-start circuit controls the output voltage rise time to 0.6 ms, limiting inrush current when charging downstream capacitive loads. The active-high enable input allows system-level power sequencing, and the open-drain OC (overcurrent) fault output provides glitch-free fault reporting to the host controller. The device is UL listed (file E169910) for safety-critical applications and supports bidirectional current flow for battery charging applications.

The TPS2065DR integrates a high-side N-channel power MOSFET with a charge pump for gate drive, current sensing, and protection circuits. An internal charge pump generates a gate voltage approximately 6V above the input supply to fully enhance the N-channel MOSFET, achieving the low 70 mOhm RDS(ON). The current-limiting circuit senses the MOSFET current through an internal sense element and compares it to a reference. When the load current exceeds the current-limit threshold (1.1A minimum), the regulator loop limits the MOSFET gate voltage to maintain constant current, reducing the output voltage as necessary. The OC (overcurrent) open-drain output is asserted low when the device is in current limit or the output voltage drops below the input by more than the fault threshold. The soft-start circuit gradually increases the gate voltage during turn-on, limiting the output dv/dt and the resulting inrush current. The undervoltage lockout (UVLO) circuit keeps the MOSFET off when the input voltage is below the UVLO threshold, preventing operation with insufficient gate drive. The overtemperature shutdown disables the MOSFET when the junction temperature exceeds the safe operating limit.
