The TPD4E1B06DCKR from Texas Instruments is a 4-channel unidirectional ESD protection diode array in an ultra-compact SOT-363 (SC-88) package. The device provides four independent ESD protection channels, each with 0.5pF typical capacitance, making it ideal for protecting high-speed digital interfaces where signal integrity must be preserved. The 5.5V working voltage (VRWM) covers 3.3V and 5V digital signal levels with adequate margin. The 9.5V typical clamping voltage at 8kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge ensures that the voltage seen by the protected IC remains well below its absolute maximum rating during ESD events. The unidirectional configuration is optimized for digital signals that swing between 0V and VCC, providing lower capacitance than bidirectional devices since only one diode is in the signal path. The 0.05uA typical leakage current at VRWM minimizes power consumption in always-on protection configurations. The SOT-363 (SC-88) package measures only 2.0mm x 1.25mm, providing the smallest possible footprint for space-constrained portable electronics. The device meets IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 (+/-8kV contact, +/-15kV air discharge).

The TPD4E1B06DCKR uses steering diode ESD protection architecture. (1) Normal Operation: During normal operation, each signal line (I/O1 through I/O4) is connected to ground through a reverse-biased steering diode. The diode capacitance of 0.5pF is the only load on the signal line, which is negligible even for multi-Gbps signals. (2) Positive ESD Event: When a positive ESD strike occurs on a signal line, the steering diode for that channel forward biases, clamping the line to approximately one diode drop above VCC (or GND if the VCC pin is connected to GND). The ESD current is diverted through the diode to ground, away from the protected IC. (3) Negative ESD Event: For unidirectional devices, negative ESD events are clamped by the reverse breakdown of the diode, or by the forward-biased path from GND to the signal line through the lower diode. (4) Low Capacitance: The 0.5pF capacitance is achieved by using minimum-area diode junctions. The trade-off is slightly higher clamping voltage compared to larger TVS devices, but the low capacitance is essential for high-speed interfaces like USB 3.0, HDMI, and MIPI where even 1pF of added capacitance can degrade signal quality.
