The TMP36GRTZ-REEL7 from Analog Devices is a low-voltage, precision analog output temperature sensor that provides a voltage output linearly proportional to the Celsius temperature. Operating from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply, the TMP36 outputs 750mV at 25 C with a scale factor of 10mV/C. No external calibration is required to achieve typical accuracy of +/-1 C at 25 C. The low quiescent current of less than 50uA minimizes self-heating, making it suitable for battery-powered applications. The device can be shut down by forcing the output pin low, reducing supply current to under 0.5uA. The 500mV offset at 0 C allows reading negative temperatures on single-supply systems. The TMP36 is available in a compact SOT-23-3 package and is specified over the -40 to +125 C temperature range.

The TMP36GRTZ-REEL7 operates as a bandgap temperature sensor with linear output. Key subsystems include: (1) Bandgap Reference – a precision bandgap circuit that generates a voltage proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT); (2) Temperature-Sensitive Element – uses the predictable Vbe temperature coefficient of silicon transistors to generate a PTAT voltage; (3) Output Amplifier – amplifies and offsets the PTAT voltage to produce a Celsius-scaled output (10mV/C with 500mV offset at 0 C); (4) Output Stage – a low-impedance output buffer capable of driving ADC inputs directly without external buffering. The 500mV offset at 0 C allows reading negative temperatures on single-supply systems.
