The Trinamic TMC5160A-TA-T is a high-power stepper motor driver and controller IC integrating a motion controller with a 3A stepper motor driver in a single 48-pin TQFP package. The device combines Trinamic’s renowned StealthChop2 ultra-silent motor driving with StallGuard2 sensorless homing and CoolStep adaptive current control, delivering the most feature-rich stepper motor driver available at this power level. The integrated motion controller offloads ramp generation and position management from the host MCU—the user simply writes the target position to a register via SPI, and the TMC5160A autonomously computes and executes the velocity and acceleration profile. The TMC5160A uses an SPI interface for configuration and motion control. At motor speeds above the StealthChop2 threshold (programmable), the driver transitions to SpreadCycle, a current-mode chopper that uses a sophisticated cycle-by-cycle current regulation with freewheeling phase for optimal high-speed torque. StallGuard2 works by measuring the difference between the coil current and the expected current during the active chopper phase—when the motor hits a mechanical obstruction, the back-EMF drops, causing a detectable change in the current regulation behavior. CoolStep uses the StallGuard signal as a proxy for mechanical load and reduces the coil current proportionally when the load is below the full-load threshold.
