The THVD1419DT from Texas Instruments is a 3.3V to 5V half-duplex RS-485 transceiver with integrated surge protection in a standard SOIC-8 package. The integrated TVS diodes provide IEC 61000-4-5 +/-2.5kV surge protection and IEC 61000-4-2 +/-8kV contact discharge ESD protection, eliminating the need for external protection components and reducing board space. The device supports data rates up to 250 kbps with a wide +/-12V common-mode range suitable for long cable runs. Features include 30 mV receiver hysteresis for noise rejection, glitch-free power-up/down for hot-plug capability, open/short/idle bus failsafe, and 1/8 unit load supporting up to 256 nodes on the bus. Standby current is below 2 uA.

The THVD1419DT integrates an RS-485 transceiver with TVS surge protection diodes. (1) Transmitter: The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic levels (D input) to differential RS-485 signals (A and B bus outputs) compliant with TIA/EIA-485A. The driver output is enabled by the DE (driver enable) pin. When disabled, the driver outputs are high-impedance. (2) Receiver: The receiver converts differential RS-485 bus signals (A and B) to single-ended logic levels (R output). The receiver is enabled when RE is low and disabled (high-impedance R output) when RE is high. With 30 mV hysteresis, the receiver rejects noise on the bus. (3) Failsafe: Open, short, and idle bus conditions bias the receiver output to a known high state, preventing erroneous data. (4) Surge Protection: Integrated bidirectional TVS diodes on the A and B bus pins clamp voltage transients from cable-coupled surge events, providing IEC 61000-4-5 +/-2.5kV protection without external components.
