The TEA19161T is an NXP GreenChip™ digital controller for high-efficiency resonant (LLC) power supplies, designed to operate with the TEA19162T PFC controller. It uniquely introduces a low-power mode between continuous switching and burst mode, maintaining high efficiency across all load levels. Using Vcap control (regulating via resonant capacitor voltage) instead of traditional frequency control, it provides accurate state control and linear power regulation. The system achieves below 75mW no-load power and is suited for 90W-500W applications including TV, desktop, and adapter power supplies.

The TEA19161T controls the LLC resonant converter using a unique Vcap control method. Instead of regulating output power by adjusting switching frequency (traditional approach), it measures the voltage across the primary resonant capacitor through the SNSCAP pin, which provides accurate information about the output power level. Based on this measurement, the controller transitions between three modes: (1) High-power mode for full load, (2) Low-power mode where switching continues at reduced energy per cycle, and (3) Burst mode for very light loads. This approach provides linear power control and smooth mode transitions. The integrated high-voltage start-up source and level shifter reduce external component count, while the digital control logic manages protection, soft start, and communication with the TEA19162T PFC controller.
