The STTH1210DI from STMicroelectronics is a 1200V, 12A ultra-fast recovery diode in a D2PAK-2 package using ST turbo 2 technology. The device provides 55ns typical reverse recovery time with soft recovery characteristic, minimizing switching losses and EMI in high-frequency applications. Forward voltage is 2.5V typical at 12A. The 1200V blocking voltage makes it suitable for PFC boost converter output diodes in off-line SMPS, operating from universal AC input. The D2PAK-2 package provides low thermal resistance for surface-mount power applications. Maximum repetitive peak reverse current is 8A, and operating junction temperature is -40C to +175C.

The STTH1210DI uses ST’s turbo 2 planar diode technology for ultra-fast soft recovery. (1) Forward Conduction: When forward biased, minority carriers are injected into the drift region, reducing resistance (conductivity modulation). This results in a forward voltage drop of 2.5V at 12A. (2) Reverse Recovery: When the diode is rapidly reverse biased (e.g., when the MOSFET turns on in a PFC boost circuit), the stored minority carriers must be removed before the diode can block voltage. The turbo 2 technology uses local lifetime control to accelerate carrier recombination, achieving 55ns trr. (3) Soft Recovery: The recovery current decreases gradually rather than snapping off, reducing voltage overshoot and high-frequency EMI. The softness factor (tb/ta) is optimized for PFC applications. (4) 1200V Blocking: The thick drift region and edge termination provide 1200V blocking capability for PFC boost converters operating from 400V DC bus.
