The STPS340U from STMicroelectronics is a 3A 40V Schottky rectifier diode in an SMA (DO-214AC) surface-mount package. As a Schottky barrier rectifier, it uses a metal-silicon junction that provides a significantly lower forward voltage drop (0.55V typical at 3A) compared to standard silicon P-N junction diodes (typically 0.9-1.0V at the same current). This lower forward voltage directly reduces conduction power loss (P = VF x IF), improving efficiency in power supply rectification and free-wheeling applications. The 3A continuous current rating and 80A surge current rating make the STPS340U suitable for medium-power DC-DC converters, buck converter free-wheeling diodes, and reverse polarity protection in 12V and 24V systems. The 40V reverse voltage rating provides adequate margin for 12V automotive systems and 24V industrial supplies. As a majority-carrier device, the Schottky rectifier has essentially zero reverse recovery time, eliminating reverse recovery losses that limit P-N diode performance at high switching frequencies. The SMA package provides a compact footprint (5.2 x 2.6mm) suitable for automated surface-mount assembly, and its thermal resistance supports the full 3A rating with proper PCB copper area for heat dissipation.

The STPS340U operates as a Schottky barrier rectifier using a metal-semiconductor junction. The low barrier height of the Schottky junction results in a forward voltage drop of approximately 0.55V at rated current, compared to 0.7-1.0V for P-N silicon diodes. As a majority-carrier device, the STPS340U has essentially zero reverse recovery time, eliminating the reverse recovery charge and associated switching losses. The tradeoff for low VF is higher reverse leakage current compared to P-N diodes, but at 0.3mA maximum at rated voltage and 25C, this is acceptable for most applications.
