The SS24 from onsemi is a Schottky barrier power rectifier designed for low-voltage, high-frequency applications. Using the Schottky Barrier principle in a metal-to-silicon power rectifier with epitaxial construction and oxide passivation, the device achieves a low forward voltage drop of 0.50 V maximum at 2 A. The guardring structure provides over-voltage protection during transient events. The SMB (DO-214AA) package with J-bend leads is optimized for automated handling in surface-mount assembly. The device is suitable for freewheeling, secondary rectification, and reverse polarity protection in switching power supplies where compact size and low power loss are critical.

The SS24 employs a Schottky barrier junction formed by the contact between a metal (typically molybdenum or chromium) and an n-type silicon epitaxial layer. Unlike conventional p-n junction diodes, the Schottky barrier is a majority-carrier device that eliminates minority carrier storage during forward conduction. This results in negligible reverse recovery time, making the device ideal for high-frequency switching applications. The epitaxial construction with oxide passivation ensures junction stability and low leakage. The guardring around the active area prevents voltage crowding at the junction edges, enhancing the avalanche capability. During forward bias, electrons flow from the n-type silicon into the metal with a barrier height that determines the forward voltage drop.
