The SN65HVD74DR is a Texas Instruments 3.3 V full-duplex RS-485 transceiver optimized for 20 Mbps data rate with robust ESD protection. The ±12 kV IEC 61000-4-2 and >±30 kV HBM ESD ratings protect against electrostatic discharge in harsh industrial environments. The device is fully enabled without external enable pins, simplifying design. A 70 mV receiver hysteresis provides excellent noise rejection on long bus cables. The 1/8 unit load allows up to 256 nodes on a single bus. 5 V tolerant logic inputs are compatible with both 3.3 V and 5 V controllers. Packaged in an 8-pin SOIC rated for -40°C to +125°C.

The SN65HVD74 operates as a full-duplex RS-485 transceiver with independent driver and receiver paths. The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic (DI input) into differential signals on the Y and Z bus outputs, while the receiver converts differential bus signals (A and B inputs) into single-ended logic (RO output). The driver and receiver are always enabled (no DE/RE control pins), simplifying the design for full-duplex point-to-point applications. The 70 mV receiver hysteresis ensures reliable data reception in the presence of common-mode noise, while the wide common-mode range (-7 V to +12 V) supports long cable runs with ground potential differences.
