The Texas Instruments SN65HVD232QDRQ1 is an AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified CAN bus transceiver designed for use with the Controller Area Network (CAN) serial communication protocol. Operating from a single 3.3V supply, it provides the physical layer interface between the CAN protocol controller and the differential bus. The device supports data rates up to 1Mbps and provides +-36V bus fault protection, meeting the requirements of ISO 11898. The low-power standby mode reduces current consumption to 200uA typical for battery-saving applications. The transceiver is designed for harsh automotive environments with cross-wire, overvoltage, and ground loss protection. An unpowered node presents a high-impedance state that does not disturb the bus, supporting hot-plug applications.

The SN65HVD232QDRQ1 operates as a CAN physical layer transceiver: 1) Transmit Path: When the CAN controller drives the TXD pin low (dominant), the transceiver drives the CANH line high and CANL line low, creating a differential voltage of approximately 2V on the bus. When TXD is high (recessive), both bus lines are biased to 2.5V (0V differential). 2) Receive Path: The differential receiver continuously monitors the bus voltage. When CANH-CANL exceeds the dominant threshold (0.9V), the RXD output goes low. When below the recessive threshold (0.5V), RXD goes high. 3) Protection: The bus pins can withstand +-36V DC fault conditions. During common-mode events (e.g., ground shift), the -12V to +12V common-mode range ensures reliable reception. 4) Standby Mode: The RS (Rate Select / Standby) pin enables a low-power standby mode where the driver is disabled and the receiver operates at reduced bandwidth for wake-up detection.
