The SN65HVD230DR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3V CAN bus transceiver compatible with the ISO 11898-2 standard for high-speed CAN physical layer. It is designed for data rates up to 1 Mbps and includes multiple protection features for robust operation in harsh environments. The RS pin provides three operating modes: high-speed, slope control, and low-power standby, allowing flexible system design. The device is pin-compatible with the PCA82C250 as a low-power alternative.

The SN65HVD230DR interfaces a single-ended CAN protocol controller to the differential CAN bus. The driver converts single-ended TX data to differential signals on CANH and CANL, while the receiver converts the differential bus signal back to single-ended RX data. The RS pin controls the operating mode: grounded for high-speed mode (unlimited slew rate), connected through a resistor for slope control (proportional to current), or pulled high for standby mode where the driver is disabled but the receiver remains active. Thermal shutdown protects against overtemperature conditions, and the open-circuit fail-safe design ensures defined states on unterminated buses.
