The SMF12A is a 200 W unidirectional transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode designed to protect 12 V circuits from electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and surge events. It features 12 V standoff voltage, 13.3-14.7 V breakdown, and 19.9 V clamping at 10.1 A peak pulse current. The SOD-123FL low-profile package suits high-density PCBs in smartphones, portable devices, and automotive electronics. With only 2.5 uA leakage at standoff voltage, it minimizes power consumption in always-on protection circuits.

The SMF12A operates as an avalanche diode designed to conduct heavily when the voltage across it exceeds the breakdown threshold. Under normal operating conditions (below 12 V), the device presents high impedance with only 2.5 uA leakage. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage (13.3-14.7 V), the device avalanches and clamps the voltage to a safe level (19.9 V at full rated current). The clamping action is essentially instantaneous (sub-nanosecond response). The 200 W peak pulse power rating is specified for an 8/20 us or 10/1000 us waveform, with energy absorption limited by the thermal capacity of the junction and package.
