The SMBJ30CA is a 600W bidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode in a DO-214AA (SMB) surface-mount package. The CA suffix indicates bidirectional (symmetrical clamping in both positive and negative directions). With 30V standoff voltage, it is specifically designed for 24V and 28V nominal DC bus applications commonly found in industrial automation, telecom, and automotive systems. The 48.4V maximum clamping voltage at 12.4A peak pulse current ensures protected components see limited voltage excursions during surge events. The planar technology construction provides low leakage current (0.2uA typical at 25C) and high junction temperature capability (150C max) for reliable long-term operation.

The SMBJ30CA operates through bidirectional avalanche clamping: (1) Normal Operation: When the voltage across the device is below the 30V standoff voltage, both internal avalanche diodes are in their high-impedance reverse-biased state, with less than 1uA leakage current. This makes the TVS effectively invisible to the protected circuit. (2) Surge Clamping: When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage (33.3V minimum) in either direction, the corresponding avalanche diode conducts, clamping the voltage. At the rated peak pulse current of 12.4A, the voltage is clamped to a maximum of 48.4V. (3) Energy Dissipation: The TVS absorbs the transient energy by converting it to heat in the semiconductor junction. The 600W peak pulse power is rated for a 10/1000us IEC 61000-4-5 waveform. The device also withstands 4kW (8/20us) short-duration surges. The response time is in the picosecond range, providing protection before downstream components can be damaged.
