The SMBJ20CA is a Littelfuse bidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode rated for 600W peak pulse power (10/1000 µs waveform) with a 20V working standoff voltage in an SMB (DO-214AA) surface-mount package. The bidirectional configuration (CA suffix) provides symmetrical clamping for both positive and negative transients, making it ideal for AC signal lines and differential data buses. The device clamps at 32.4V under peak pulse current (18.5A) and features ultra-low leakage current of 1 µA maximum at the standoff voltage.

The SMBJ20CA operates as a voltage-clamping device using avalanche breakdown in its PN junction. Under normal operating conditions (voltage below 20V standoff), the TVS presents high impedance with minimal leakage current (<1 µA). When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage (22.2-24.5V), the device enters avalanche conduction, shunting the transient current away from protected circuitry. The bidirectional configuration uses two back-to-back PN junctions to provide symmetrical clamping for both positive and negative transients, limiting the voltage to the clamping voltage (32.4V) during surge events.
