The SI8642BD-B-IS from Skyworks Solutions is a quad-channel digital isolator from the Si864x family, designed using capacitive coupling technology to provide robust galvanic isolation for digital communication interfaces. The device features 2 forward and 2 reverse channels, making it ideal for isolating bidirectional buses such as SPI, I2C, and UART. With a 5000 V rms isolation rating, it supports reinforced insulation requirements for industrial and medical applications. The isolator supports data rates up to 150 Mbps with a typical propagation delay of only 8 ns, enabling high-speed communication without significant latency. The device operates from a 2.5 V to 5.5 V supply range with Schmitt trigger inputs for high noise immunity. It requires only VDD bypass capacitors as external components, simplifying PCB layout. The B-grade device supports operating temperatures up to 125°C and features selectable fail-safe output states that determine the default output when input power is lost.

The SI8642BD-B-IS operates through capacitive isolation with three key subsystems: (1) The RF oscillator and modulator encode the digital input signal into a high-frequency carrier that is transmitted across the on-chip capacitive isolation barrier. Each channel has its own dedicated isolation capacitor pair, providing independent signal paths. (2) The capacitive isolation barrier consists of on-chip silicon dioxide capacitors that provide galvanic isolation up to 5000 V rms while maintaining high common-mode transient immunity of >35 kV/us. The barrier also ensures low capacitive coupling between input and output, minimizing EMI. (3) The demodulator and output driver recover the original digital signal on the isolated side, with Schmitt trigger outputs for noise immunity. The fail-safe logic ensures predictable output states during power-up, power-down, and input power loss conditions. The enable inputs (EN1, EN2) provide a single control point for enabling or disabling the output drivers.
