The RTL8370N-VB from Realtek is a Layer 2 managed 8-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet switch controller in a BGA package. The device integrates eight Gigabit Ethernet PHYs with a non-blocking wire-speed switching fabric. Management features include 4096 IEEE 802.1Q VLANs plus 32 enhanced VLANs, 8 priority queues per port with strict and WRR scheduling, 96 ACL rules, 802.3ad Link Aggregation, STP/RSTP/MSTP spanning tree, IGMP snooping, port mirroring, and MIB counters. An embedded 8051 MCU handles management functions. The device supports SPI flash for firmware and configuration storage, and can be managed via SMI (MDC/MDIO) or UART interface.

The RTL8370N-VB integrates all Gigabit switch functions with Layer 2 management. (1) PHY: Eight integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet PHYs handle physical layer encoding/decoding, auto-negotiation, and auto-MDIX for Gigabit operation. (2) MAC: Eight MACs handle frame reception, CRC checking, frame transmission, and flow control (IEEE 802.3x). (3) Switching Fabric: A non-blocking shared-memory fabric forwards frames at wire speed with 16Gbps aggregate bandwidth. (4) Management Engine: An embedded 8051 MCU executes the management firmware stored in external SPI flash, handling VLAN, QoS, ACL, STP, IGMP, and other management tasks. (5) ACL: 96 ACL rules match on frame fields (MAC, IP, TCP/UDP port, VLAN) for security filtering and traffic classification.
