The REF3012AIDBZR from Texas Instruments is a 1.25V precision CMOS series voltage reference in a tiny 3-pin SOT-23 package. The A grade provides 0.2% initial voltage accuracy at 25C, and the I suffix indicates the industrial temperature range of -40C to +125C. The DBZ suffix denotes the SOT-23-3 package, and R indicates tape and reel packaging. The REF3012 is part of the REF30xx family that uses a CMOS bandgap architecture optimized for low power consumption (42uA typical quiescent current) and low dropout voltage (1mV typical at zero load). The 1mV dropout allows the reference to operate with the input voltage only 1mV above the 1.25V output, making it ideal for battery-powered applications where supply headroom is limited. The device does not require an output capacitor for stability, simplifying PCB layout and reducing component count in intrinsically safe and explosion-proof applications. The 25mA output current capability is sufficient to drive most ADC and DAC reference inputs. The 14uVpp low-frequency noise (0.1 to 10Hz) ensures stable conversion results in precision measurement systems.

The REF3012AIDBZR uses a CMOS bandgap voltage reference architecture. The core bandgap circuit generates a stable voltage by combining a proportional-to-absolute-temperature (PTAT) voltage with a complementary-to-absolute-temperature (CTAT) voltage from a forward-biased PN junction. When properly trimmed, the PTAT and CTAT temperature coefficients cancel, producing a nearly temperature-independent reference voltage. The REF30xx family implements this in a CMOS process, allowing the very low 42uA quiescent current compared to bipolar references that typically draw hundreds of microamps. The series reference topology includes an internal error amplifier and pass transistor that regulate the output voltage. The 1mV dropout voltage is achieved by using a low-threshold CMOS pass element that requires minimal headroom between input and output. The output stage is designed to be unconditionally stable without an external capacitor, achieved by ensuring the output impedance and error amplifier bandwidth create a single dominant pole within the feedback loop. Laser trimming of internal resistors sets the 1.25V output to 0.2% accuracy at the factory. The 50ppm/C temperature drift specification results from second-order curvature correction in the bandgap circuit.
