The PEX8604-BA50BCG from Broadcom (formerly PLX Technology) is a 4-lane 4-port PCI Express Gen 2 switch capable of 5.0 GT/s per lane. The device features non-blocking architecture with 190 ns cut-through latency, supporting full line rate on all ports simultaneously. One port can be configured as non-transparent for dual-host and failover applications. The dual cast feature copies data from one ingress port to two egress ports for storage mirroring and security applications. Read pacing ensures fair bandwidth allocation across ports. All ports support hot-plug operation. The 1.29 W typical power consumption and 15x15mm PBGA make it suitable for space-constrained consumer and embedded designs. Note: This product is obsolete and not recommended for new designs.

The PEX8604-BA50BCG implements a non-blocking crossbar switch fabric connecting four PCIe ports. Each port can be configured as x1 or x2 lane width through strapping pins, EEPROM, I2C, or host software. The switch operates in two modes: transparent mode for standard PCIe topology (upstream/downstream) and non-transparent mode for dual-host isolation. In transparent mode, the switch forwards configuration, memory, and I/O transactions between upstream and downstream ports following PCIe forwarding rules. In non-transparent mode, address windows translate addresses between the two host domains, allowing isolated hosts to share memory-mapped resources. The cut-through architecture begins forwarding a packet to the egress port before the entire packet is received, achieving 190 ns latency. Dual cast duplicates packets from one ingress to two egress ports in a single pass. The two virtual channels per port provide QoS differentiation for isochronous vs. bulk traffic.
