The NXP PCAL6416AHF is a 16-bit general-purpose I/O expander that provides remote I/O expansion for most microcontroller families via the I2C-bus interface. It features dual supply rails (VDD(I2C) and VDD(P)) ranging from 1.65V to 5.5V, enabling seamless level translation between the I2C bus side and the GPIO port side. As part of NXP’s Agile I/O family, it adds programmable output drive strength, latchable inputs, programmable pull-up/pull-down resistors, maskable interrupts, and programmable open-drain or push-pull outputs beyond the standard PCA6416A feature set. The device is pin-to-pin compatible with PCA6416A but powers up with all I/O interrupts masked to prevent spurious interrupts during board bring-up.

The PCAL6416AHF communicates with the host microcontroller via the I2C/SMBus interface at up to 400 kHz. The dual-supply architecture separates VDD(I2C) which powers the interface side (SDA/SCL) from VDD(P) which powers the GPIO port and core logic, enabling voltage level translation between the two domains without external components. The 16 I/O pins are organized into two 8-bit ports (P0 and P1), each configurable as input or output via configuration registers. Input polarity inversion registers eliminate external logic gates. The Agile I/O features include programmable pull-up/pull-down resistors (eliminating discrete components), output drive strength selection, input latch mode that holds the state that triggered an interrupt until serviced, and interrupt masking per-channel to prevent unwanted interrupts.
