The NCP5500DT33RKG from onsemi is a 150mA low-dropout linear regulator with a fixed 3.3V output, housed in a DPAK surface-mount package. The device stands out for its ultra-low quiescent current of 3.5uA typical, making it one of the most power-efficient LDOs in its class for always-on applications. The wide input voltage range of 3.5V to 40V accommodates automotive battery rails with full load-dump transient headroom. With a dropout voltage of only 300mV at 150mA, the NCP5500 can maintain regulation from a single Li-Ion cell or a 5V rail. The active-high enable pin allows external power sequencing or microcontroller-controlled shutdown, reducing system standby current to near-zero levels. The device also provides 75dB PSRR at 1kHz and only 60uVrms output noise, ensuring a clean supply for noise-sensitive RF and precision analog circuits.

The NCP5500DT33RKG uses a P-channel MOSFET pass transistor controlled by an error amplifier that compares a fraction of the output voltage to an internal 1.23V bandgap reference. The feedback divider is internal for the fixed 3.3V output version. The enable (EN) pin controls the gate bias of the pass transistor; when EN is driven high (above 1.5V), the pass transistor is enabled and regulation begins. When EN is low (below 0.5V), the pass transistor is cut off, reducing the device current to sub-microamp levels. The thermal shutdown circuit disables the output when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 150C, while the short-circuit current limiter clamps the output current to approximately 200mA during fault conditions. The internal compensation network ensures stability with a 10uF output capacitor.
