The MSP430F5259IRGCR from Texas Instruments is a 16-bit ultra-low-power microcontroller based on the MSP430 CPUXV2 core running at up to 25MHz. The device integrates 128KB Flash, 16KB RAM, a 12-channel 10-bit ADC, four 16-bit timers, and four USCI communication modules each supporting UART, SPI, and I2C. The ultra-low-power architecture features active current of 290uA/MHz and standby current of 2.1uA in LPM3 with RTC, with 3.5us fast wakeup. The 53 I/O pins provide extensive connectivity. The MSP430F5259IRGCR operates as an ultra-low-power 16-bit RISC microcontroller. (1) The MSP430 CPUXV2 core executes 16-bit instructions with a 25MHz maximum clock, providing high code efficiency through constant generators and 16-bit registers. The unified clock system (UCS) supports multiple clock sources including an internal DCO with FLL for frequency stability, a 32kHz crystal for RTC, and an external high-frequency crystal. (2) The four USCI modules (USCI_A0, A1, B0, B1) each support UART, SPI, and I2C protocols, enabling simultaneous multi-protocol communication. USCI_A modules provide UART with IrDA support, while USCI_B modules provide I2C with multi-master capability. (3) The power management system supports seven low-power modes: Active, LPM0 (CPU off, clocks on), LPM1-3 (progressively fewer clocks), LPM4 (CPU off, RTC off), and LPM4.5 (core logic powered down, 0.18uA). The 3.5us wakeup from LPM3 enables frequent sleep-wake cycles with minimal energy overhead, critical for battery-powered measurement applications.
