The MPS MPQ4420AGJ-AEC1 is a 55 V, 2 A synchronous step-down converter with integrated power MOSFETs, designed for automotive and industrial power supply applications. The wide 4 V to 55 V input range accommodates 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V automotive bus systems with margin for load dump transients. The integrated 140 mΩ high-side and 90 mΩ low-side MOSFETs eliminate external switches, reducing component count and solution footprint. The programmable switching frequency (200 kHz to 2 MHz) allows designers to trade off efficiency vs. inductor size. PFM (pulse-frequency modulation) mode reduces quiescent current to 12 µA at light load, improving battery life in always-on automotive ECUs. External compensation provides flexibility to optimize transient response for different output filter configurations. The QFN-10 (3 x 3 mm) package offers a compact footprint with exposed thermal pad for efficient heat dissipation.

The MPQ4420AGJ-AEC1 uses a current-mode control architecture for the synchronous buck converter. The high-side MOSFET (140 mΩ) connects the input voltage to the inductor during the on-time, while the low-side MOSFET (90 mΩ) provides a recirculation path during the off-time, replacing the conventional Schottky diode for higher efficiency. Current-mode control senses the inductor current through the high-side MOSFET RDS(on) (lossless sensing), providing cycle-by-cycle current limiting and improved loop stability compared to voltage-mode control. The error amplifier compares the output voltage (via an external resistor divider) with the 0.8 V internal reference and adjusts the duty cycle accordingly. External compensation (a Type-II RC network on the COMP pin) sets the crossover frequency and phase margin. At light loads, PFM mode skips pulses to maintain regulation with minimal switching losses, reducing the effective switching frequency and quiescent current to 12 µA. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and over-temperature shutdown (OTP).
