The MPQ28163GD-Z is a Monolithic Power Systems non-isolated buck-boost LED driver with a wide 4.5V to 36V input range. It integrates a 40V/3.5A power MOSFET and delivers up to 1.5A LED current, supporting both buck and boost topologies. The device features analog and PWM dimming, programmable switching frequency (200kHz to 2MHz), and spread spectrum for EMI reduction. Packaged in SOT-89-5, it is ideal for automotive headlight, DRL, and industrial LED lighting applications.

The MPQ28163GD-Z operates as a non-isolated buck-boost converter using a single integrated power MOSFET and external Schottky diode. In buck mode, when the LED string voltage is below the input, it functions as a standard step-down converter. In boost mode, when LED voltage exceeds the input, it operates as a step-up converter. The seamless buck-boost transition allows operation across the full input voltage range without discontinuity. LED current is regulated through a low-side sense resistor with a precision current sense amplifier. Analog dimming adjusts the internal reference voltage, while PWM dimming chops the LED current on and off at high frequency for accurate average current control.
