The Lite-On MOC3023S-TA1 is a random-fire triac driver optocoupler designed for interfacing low-voltage control circuits to high-voltage AC loads through power triacs. The device provides 5000 Vrms galvanic isolation between the LED input and the triac driver output, meeting safety requirements for AC mains-connected equipment. The MOC3023 variant features the lowest trigger current in the MOC302x series at 5 mA maximum, reducing the drive requirements from the microcontroller or logic gate. The 400V peak blocking voltage supports direct operation on 240VAC mains with appropriate safety margin. The random-fire (non-zero-crossing) output enables phase-angle control for dimming and motor speed control applications where precise firing angle control is required. The high 1000 V/µs dv/dt immunity prevents false triggering in electrically noisy industrial environments. The surface-mount gull-wing package (S suffix) with tape-and-reel packaging (TA1 suffix) enables automated SMT assembly.

The MOC3023S-TA1 consists of a gallium arsenide infrared LED optically coupled to a silicon bilateral switch (diac/triac driver) in a single package. When current flows through the input LED (IF > IFT = 5 mA), the emitted infrared light illuminates the photosensitive bilateral switch, causing it to conduct and trigger the external power triac gate. The bilateral switch conducts in both directions, enabling AC triggering of the external triac regardless of the AC line polarity. The optocoupler structure provides galvanic isolation up to 5000 Vrms between the low-voltage control side (LED) and the high-voltage power side (triac driver output), meeting IEC 60747-5-2 safety requirements. The random-fire (non-zero-crossing) characteristic means the bilateral switch triggers immediately when the LED current exceeds IFT, regardless of the AC line voltage phase. This enables phase-angle control where the triac is triggered at a specific point in each AC half-cycle, varying the power delivered to the load. The high dv/dt rating (1000 V/µs minimum) ensures the bilateral switch does not falsely trigger due to rapid voltage transients on the AC line. A snubber network (R-C across the power triac) may still be required for highly inductive loads to limit dv/dt below the triac’s commutation dv/dt rating.
