The MIC69502WR from Microchip Technology (formerly Micrel) is a 5A ultra-low-dropout adjustable linear regulator in S-PAK-7 package. The device features 250mV typical dropout voltage at full 5A load, adjustable output from 0.5V to 5.5V, and +/-1% initial output voltage accuracy. The 1.65V to 5.5V input range and 0.5V minimum output make it ideal for low-voltage high-current applications such as ASIC, PLD, and FPGA core power supply. The regulator is stable with a 10uF ceramic output capacitor even at full 5A load, and features logic-level enable shutdown, thermal shutdown, and current limit protection. The WR suffix denotes S-PAK-7 package with tube packaging.

The MIC69502WR operates as a high-current ultra-low-dropout linear regulator. (1) The PNP pass transistor provides low dropout voltage (250mV typical at 5A) by operating with minimal collector-emitter voltage. The output voltage is set by an external resistor divider from the output to the ADJ pin, which is compared with a 0.5V internal reference. The low 0.5V reference enables output voltages as low as 0.5V, critical for sub-1V ASIC and FPGA core supply. (2) The +/-1% initial accuracy is achieved through laser-trimmed internal references and precision resistors in the error amplifier feedback network. The excellent line regulation (0.5%) and load regulation (0.2%) maintain output voltage stability over input and load variations. (3) The S-PAK-7 package with exposed tab provides low thermal resistance for high-power dissipation. At 5A load with 1V dropout, the device dissipates 5W, requiring adequate PCB copper area for thermal management. The thermal shutdown protects the device when junction temperature exceeds the safe limit. The current limit restricts output current during fault conditions.
