The MCP2551-I/SN is a high-speed CAN (Controller Area Network) transceiver from Microchip Technology that provides the physical interface between a CAN protocol controller and the physical bus. It complies with the ISO-11898 standard, supporting data rates up to 1Mbps. The device features automatic slope control via the RS pin to reduce EMI at lower data rates, ±12V common-mode range for noise immunity in automotive environments, and bus fault protection from -24V to +18V. Short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown ensure robustness in harsh environments. The I-grade operates from -40°C to +85°C, suitable for automotive and industrial applications. Up to 112 nodes can connect to a single CAN bus.

The MCP2551-I/SN translates the TTL-level CAN protocol signals (TXD, RXD) to and from the differential CAN bus signals (CANH, CANL). When the CAN controller drives TXD low (dominant state), the transceiver drives CANH high (≈3.5V) and CANL low (≈1.5V), creating a 2V differential voltage on the bus. When TXD is high (recessive state), both CANH and CANL are biased to approximately 2.5V through internal resistors, creating a near-zero differential voltage. The receiver continuously monitors the bus differential voltage and drives RXD low when the differential exceeds the dominant threshold (approximately 0.9V). The RS (slope control) pin adjusts the output slew rate: connecting RS to ground enables high-speed mode (1Mbps), connecting via a resistor sets intermediate slew rates for EMI reduction at lower data rates, and connecting RS to VDD places the device in standby mode (20µA current). The ±12V common-mode range allows reliable reception even when ground shifts between nodes in automotive systems. The bus fault protection circuitry uses series resistance and clamping to survive miswiring and short-circuit conditions.
