The MC34063AP1 from onsemi is a monolithic DC-DC converter control circuit that has been in production since the 1980s and remains one of the most versatile switching regulator ICs available. It contains all the active functions required for a DC-DC converter: a temperature-compensated 1.25V reference, a comparator, an oscillator, a PWM with active current limiting, and a 1.5A Darlington output switch. With just a handful of external components (inductor, diode, capacitor, resistors), it can implement step-up (boost), step-down (buck), or voltage-inverting topologies. The switching frequency is set by the timing capacitor on pin 3, up to 100kHz. The duty cycle can be adjusted from 0-90% by the comparator. While the 1.5A internal switch limits output current, external transistors can be added for higher power. The MC34063 is ideal for low-cost, general-purpose DC-DC conversion.

The MC34063AP1 oscillator charges the timing capacitor (CT) on pin 3, generating a sawtooth waveform. The oscillator output drives the Darlington switch transistor on and off. The comparator monitors the output voltage through the feedback divider at pin 5 and compares it to the internal 1.25V reference. When the feedback voltage drops below 1.25V, the comparator enables the oscillator, causing the switch to operate. When the output rises above the setpoint, the comparator disables the oscillator. In boost topology, the inductor stores energy during switch-on time and releases it through the diode to the output during switch-off, producing an output voltage higher than the input. In buck topology, the switch connects the input to the LC filter during on-time, and the diode provides a current path during off-time. The current-sensing resistor at pin 7 provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting.
