The MAX815TESA+T is a precision microprocessor supervisory circuit from Analog Devices/Maxim Integrated, part of the MAX814/MAX815/MAX816 family. It provides three critical monitoring functions in a single 8-SOIC package: power-on reset with ±1% threshold accuracy, an independent watchdog timer with 1.56-second timeout, and a power-fail comparator with a 1.70V threshold. The T-suffix indicates a 3.03V reset threshold, optimized for 3.3V systems with tight voltage tolerances. The push-pull totem pole RESET output is guaranteed valid down to VCC = 1V, ensuring reliable processor initialization even during slow supply ramps or brownout conditions. A manual reset input allows external triggering of the reset function.

The MAX815 continuously monitors the VCC supply voltage against its precision internal reference. When VCC falls below the 3.03V reset threshold, the RESET output asserts low within nanoseconds. Once VCC rises above the threshold, a 140ms minimum reset timeout holds RESET low to allow the power supply and processor to stabilize. The watchdog timer monitors activity on the WDI pin; if no transition occurs within 1.56 seconds, the WDO output asserts low, indicating a software hang. The power-fail comparator has an independent 1.70V threshold on the PFI pin, providing early warning of impending power failure via the PFO output before the main reset threshold is reached.

  • 3.3V Microcontroller Supervision: The 3.03V threshold provides early reset warning for 3.3V systems with ±5% tolerance, ensuring the MCU is held in reset before VCC drops below 3.15V (3.3V minus 5%). Connect RESET to the MCU active-low reset pin. Add a 100kΩ pulldown on RESET for valid output below 1V.
  • Power-Fail Early Warning: Use the PFI/PFO comparator to monitor an upstream supply rail (e.g., 12V via resistor divider) before it reaches the 3.3V regulator. PFO can trigger an interrupt on the MCU, allowing graceful shutdown and data saving before the main reset occurs.
  • Watchdog for Software Reliability: Connect WDI to a GPIO pin toggled by the firmware’s main loop. If the software hangs, the 1.56s watchdog timeout asserts WDO, which can be connected to MR to force a system reset, recovering from crashes automatically.
