The MAX487ESA+T from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a low-power, slew-rate-limited RS-485/RS-422 transceiver containing one driver and one receiver for half-duplex communication. Its 1/4 unit-load receiver input impedance (48 kOhm) allows up to 128 transceivers to share a single bus, quadrupling the node count of standard RS-485 transceivers. The reduced slew-rate driver minimizes EMI and reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, enabling error-free data transmission up to 250 kbps. With 120 uA quiescent current and 0.1 uA shutdown current, it is optimized for battery-powered and low-power applications.

The MAX487ESA+T converts between TTL/CMOS logic levels and RS-485/RS-422 differential signal levels. The driver uses a current-limiting output stage that drives the A and B bus lines with complementary signals: a logic low on DI drives A high and B low (differential output), while a logic high or tri-state leaves both outputs high impedance. The slew-rate limiting is achieved by controlling the output transition time to approximately 250 ns, which reduces high-frequency spectral content that causes EMI and cable reflections. The receiver has a 70 mV hysteresis for noise immunity and a fail-safe circuit that guarantees a logic-high output when the inputs are open-circuited.
